Michael Scott was Apple's first CEO, brought in by Mike Markkula in February 1977 to manage the growing company. He oversaw Apple's transition from a garage startup to a publicly traded corporation, including the successful Apple II launch and Apple's IPO in December 1980. Scott departed in 1981 following internal conflicts, including a controversial round of layoffs known as "Black Wednesday."
